CITY OF CAPE MAY PUBLIC SAFETY BUILDING
CONCEPT DESIGN

Settembrino Architects submitted a concept design to City of Cape May for a new Public Safety Building. While recognizing the unique and varied architectural styles found in the city, ultimately the new Public Safety Building needs to be a structure that meets the needs of the community today and well into the 21st century. Of the many styles of architecture found in Cape May, the “Renaissance Revival Style” as defined by the City of Cape May Historic Preservation Commission Design Standards and seen at the NJ Trust & Safe Deposit Co. Building (526 Washington Street) seemed the most appropriate for this structure. The rusticated brick, cast stone, cornice moldings., horizontal belt coursing, and overhanging eaves supported by decorative brackets are all elements that would be found on a municipal building, library, school, fire house, or police station. The flat roof with a parapet provides an opportunity for the installation of a solar panel array.

The development of a plan parti with the Police and Fire Department functions separated yet linked by a common entry lobby will also function as the space for the historic fire truck and museum. With the ability to isolate the lobby from the Police and Fire Department functions, this space can be open to residents and visitors 24/7 if the city selects.
